Iran is the focus of the United States today regarding their nuclear research program wherein Iran states that it is meant for peaceful purposes such as power generation and cancer treatments. Regardless, the U.S., U.N. and the European Union have all given sanctions for Iran’s actions but if the U.S. were to strike with a full invasion force, it would cost them $1.7 trillion in total, according to researchers.

The Federation of American Scientists, a DC-based group, released their special study titled “ Sanctions, Military Strikes, Other Potential Actions Against Iran”. It compiles the findings of nine subject matter experts with references from private consulting firms, investment banks and universities. In total, the study shows the six hypothetical U.S. options on Iran.
The range of the study covers the lower, middle and upper-cost estimates for the six scnearios with respective calculation in the possible losses in the global market, the increase of oil prices, the amount spent for military, securities and damages from the conflict.
Iran is currently under sanction from the U.S. with no access to its foreign exchange earnings overseas and the EU’s embargo of Iranian oil in July this year. This left the country’s currency, the rial, down by 80%.
One interesting option given by the scientists was “de-escalation”. This would entail that the U.S. is willing to make concessions with regards to Iraq negotiations. This means that the United States would be reducing its Gulf presence, temporarily suspend sanctions and grant waivers to Iran’s oil market. This would entiail a great global economic gain of $57 billion dollars.
